Gli Stati Uniti sono da sempre i più grandi produttori ed esportatori di film al mondo. L’industria cinematografica Hollywoodiana ha da sempre avuto un ruolo centrale nello sviluppo del mercato dell’intrattenimento globale, dalla nascita dei primi “Major Studios” nei primi anni del ‘900 (Universal, RKO, MGM, Warner Bros., UA e Paramount), agli attuali conglomerati media che operano in un indecifrato numero di industrie mediatiche (TV, giornali, cinema, radio etc…).
Nel Luglio 2015 la BBC ha realizzato un sondaggio coinvolgendo 62 critici cinematografici internazionali per stabilire quali fossero i 100 migliori film americani di sempre, in riconoscimento della profonda influenza del cinema americano nel mondo.
A tale scopo, i 62 critici professionisti sono stati selezionati in giro per il mondo, dagli UK e l’Europa continentale al Sud America, Australia, India e Medio Oriente, e chiaramente anche dagli USA.

Quali i criteri di questa classifica?
Semplicemente si è guardato ai soli film prodotti negli USA.
I registi potevano essere stranieri, ed infatti 32 film della lista sono stati diretti da registi provenienti da altre parti del mondo.
Ogni critico che ha preso parte al sondaggio ha fornito una lista di 10 film: il primo film di ogni lista ha ricevuto 10 punti, l’ultimo 1 punto.
I punti finali sono stati sommati per definire la lista definitiva.
I critici sono stati incoraggiati a fornire una lista di quelli che, secondo il loro punto di vista emotivo, rappresentano i migliori film del cinema americano, e quindi non necessariamente i più importanti.
